Are Diane Keaton and Michael Keaton Related? the Real Story Behind Their Shared Name
Diane Keaton entered the world on January 5, 1946, in Los Angeles, California, registered at birth as Diane Hall. Her father, Jack Hall, worked as a civil engineer and real estate broker. Her mother, Dorothy Keaton, was an amateur photographer and homemaker whose 1940s victory as the "Mrs. Los Angeles" pageant winner deeply shaped Diane’s visual and artistic sensibilities. She grew up alongside three younger siblings: brother Randy Hall and sisters Robin Hall and Dorrie Hall.
When she auditioned for the original Broadway staging of Hair in 1968, she discovered that an actress named Diane Hall was already registered with Actors' Equity. Rather than inventing an entirely artificial persona, she revived her mother’s maiden name: Keaton.
Years later, director Woody Allen paid direct homage to Diane’s true family heritage when crafting the romantic comedy Annie Hall (1977). "Annie" had been her real-life childhood nickname, while "Hall" was the surname she surrendered to enter the union database. Her Oscar-winning role was, in every biological sense, a portrait of Diane Hall.
