Bed Size Dimension Chart: Exact Measurements and Floor Plan Layouts
Mattress measurements only tell half the story; frame hardware defines the actual perimeter. Minimalist metal bed frames track close to the mattress edge, but storage bed frames and padded headboards add substantial bulk. A heavy wingback headboard can add 4 to 8 inches of depth, pushing the bed further into the center of the room.
Space planning relies on a simple rule: maintain at least 30 inches of walking clearance along every open side of the bed. In high-traffic routes, such as the path between the bedroom door and the en-suite bath, aim for 36 inches.
Frames with integrated drawers require particular care. A platform bed with pull-out drawers demands 20 to 24 inches of clearance just to slide open, plus room for the person accessing it. If you place a nightstand right beside the frame, it may completely block the top drawer from opening. Hydraulic gas-lift beds eliminate this issue by lifting the entire mattress deck from the foot, providing deep under-bed storage without consuming floor perimeter.
