Before and After: the Exact Technique Behind Alysa Liu's Met Gala 'No-Haircut' Hime Look

Uncover key highlights concerning Before and After: the Exact Technique Behind Alysa Liu's Met Gala 'No-Haircut' Hime Look.

The secret behind Liu’s look relies on three independent, tightly controlled layers. Rather than attempting to fold long natural strands into blunt ends, which invariably results in puffy, unrealistic bulk around the ears, her team separated the perimeter of her hairline from the bulk of her natural volume.

The stylist created a firm anchor zone around the temporal bones, using cross-pinned bobby pins treated with dry texture spray. Next, natural face-framing strands were divided horizontally. The top layer remained free while the mid-length strands were braided flat, pinned tight against the scalp, and smoothed flat using an edge control wax with strong hold. Once the interior foundation was flat, two pre-measured, 4-inch wide hair extension wefts, pre-cut to stop precisely at the hollow of the cheekbones, were clipped directly into the root anchor.

A miniature faux fringe piece was integrated right at the hairline. Liu’s natural perimeter hair was then lightly combed over the top seam of the hairpieces using a boar-bristle brush, followed by high-heat flat iron passes set at 350°F. The heat fused the natural hair and extensions visually into a single, cohesive plane. The result was seamless: absolute geometric precision with zero telltale seams.
