Carl Grimes Death Timeline: from the Fatal Woods Scuffle to His Final Farewell
Two episodes later, during the midseason finale, Season 8, Episode 8 ("How It's Gotta Be"), the Saviors launch a retaliatory bombardment on Alexandria. Negan pounds the gates with mortar shells and incendiary grenades, throwing the town into chaos. Carl takes unilateral command of the evacuation while his father is away negotiating with the Scavengers.
Carl displays staggering tactical maturity. He orchestrates smoke screen decoys, distracts Negan by offering his own life as collateral, and guides every Alexandria resident into the underground sewer tunnels. When Rick and Michonne finally fight their way into the burning settlement and descend into the dark aqueduct, they find the community alive. Carl sits silently against a brick wall. As Rick approaches, Carl pulls down his shirt, revealing the inflamed, necrotic bite on his abdomen. The midseason finale ended on Rick's shattered expression, sparking an immediate, furious internet debate that lasted the entire two-month winter hiatus.
