Complete Mafia Bike Cassette Replacement Guide: Tools, Steps, and Tuning

Everything you need to know about Complete Mafia Bike Cassette Replacement Guide: Tools, Steps, and Tuning, including critical updates.

Shift the drivetrain into the smallest cog before grabbing your tools. This relaxes the rear derailleur cage, drops spring tension, and yields the slack needed to slide the wheel out without bending the derailleur hanger.

  1. Rear wheel removal: Unthread the axle nuts on both sides using your 15mm or 17mm wrench. If your Mafia bike uses chain tensioner blocks in horizontal dropouts, loosen their tension screws by 3 to 4 turns. Push the wheel forward slightly, lift the chain off the front chainring or rear cog, and pull the axle back and out of the dropout slots.
  2. Inspect hub hardware: Check that the hub spacers and axle caps stay seated. On budget rear hubs, tugging on the cassette can unintentionally slide the entire freehub body off the axle, spilling internal driver pawls and springs across your garage floor. Keep one hand pressed against the base of the cassette while handling the wheel.
  3. Mounting the chain whip: Stand behind the wheel with the tire braced between your legs or against a workbench. Wrap the chain whip around a sprocket near the middle of the stack, holding the handle in your left hand pointing roughly toward the nine o'clock position.
  4. Engaging the lockring tool: Insert the cassette lockring tool into the splines. Position your adjustable wrench on the tool pointing toward the two o'clock position.
  5. Breaking torque: Press the wrench downward (counterclockwise) while pulling up firmly on the chain whip handle. The lockring will give way with a loud, ratcheting click as its serrated underside disengages from the smallest sprocket.
  6. Removing the stack: Unscrew the lockring by hand. Slide the individual cogs and plastic spacers off the freehub body in sequence. If the larger pinned sprockets stick due to gouges on the freehub splines, rock them gently back and forth with a rag over the teeth until they slide clear.
