The genesis of "Cake By the Ocean" traces back to a Los Angeles recording studio where former Jonas Brothers frontman Joe Jonas joined forces with Swedish production duo Mattman & Robin (Mattias Larsson and Robin Fredriksson). While discussing plans for an evening out, the producers repeatedly brought up a drink they termed "cake by the ocean." Jonas initially expressed confusion, trying to decipher whether they were describing a dessert, an elaborate California dining trend, or local slang.
The duo had confused the English phrase for the classic vodka, peach schnapps, cranberry, and orange juice cocktail known as "Sex on the Beach." Instead of correcting the mistake and moving on, Jonas recognized the phrase as a ready-made pop hook. The misnomer offered an intoxicating, PG-rated wrapper for an overtly R-rated activity, providing an ideal foundation for DNCE's debut under Republic Records.
Along with co-writer Justin Tranter, the team composed the track in a single afternoon. The resulting bassline, driven by funk sensibilities and disco pacing, set the tone for the newly assembled four-piece outfit featuring guitarist JinJoo Lee, bassist Cole Whittle, and drummer Jack Lawless.
