Who Wrote 'It's Raining Tacos'? the Real Story of Creator Parry Gripp

Curious about Who Wrote 'It's Raining Tacos'? the Real Story of Creator Parry Gripp? Read expert perspectives here.

Before Parry Gripp wrote about cheese and sour cream raining from the stratosphere, he made loud, sarcastic guitar records. In 1994, Gripp formed Nerf Herder in Santa Barbara, California. The band rode the wave of mid-nineties California pop-punk alongside Green Day and The Offspring, striking major-label gold with their self-titled 1996 debut. Their self-deprecating geek-rock culminated in a career-defining commission: composing the driving, surf-punk title theme for Joss Whedon's television sensation Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

When the commercial rock industry contracted in the early 2000s, Gripp adjusted course. Rather than chasing traditional radio play, he leaned into his lifelong obsession with commercial jingles and sharp, 30-second melodic hooks. He set up shop in his home studio, churned out daily miniature songs about internet memes, and started posting them online. What began as a playful creative exercise quickly unlocked an entirely new business model.

Gripp understood basic pop mechanics better than most traditional hitmakers: strip away self-indulgent bridges, focus exclusively on a relentless melodic earworm, and ground the lyrics in absurd, child-friendly imagery. Tracks like "Do You Like Waffles?", "Chimp, Chimpanzee", and "Hamster on a Piano" earned millions of early YouTube views. But none anticipated the explosive cultural reach of what he cooked up next.
