The journey of matcha onto the core Dutch Bros menu did not happen overnight. For years, frustrated patrons attempted makeshift secret menu drinks, requesting green tea bags steeped in tiny splashes of hot water before being dumped into cups of chocolate milk or sweet cream. The results were gritty, inconsistent, and universally disliked by drive-thru "Broistas" trying to keep ticket times under 45 seconds.
Corporate product developers conducted targeted regional trials across Southwest and Pacific Northwest locations throughout late 2024 and 2025. These tests evaluated dissolvability, sweetness balance, and speed of service. Dutch Bros landed on a pre-sweetened, finely milled green tea blend that dissolves instantly into steamed milk, iced milk bases, or blended smoothie mixes. Today, the core lineup features three foundational styles:
- Iced Matcha Latte: Whisked matcha concentrate poured over whole milk, oat milk, or almond milk and served over crushed ice.
- Hot Matcha Latte: Steamed whole milk or dairy-free alternative frothed directly with the sweetened matcha powder.
