Under official AKC registration standards, Labradors exist in three recognized colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. A red lab dog does not carry a fourth color gene. Instead, the dog operates on standard epistatic yellow genetics governed by the recessive ee alleles at the Extension locus. These alleles prevent the coat from producing eumelanin (black or dark brown pigment) across the hair shaft.

The intensity of the dog's coat is determined by secondary polygenic modifiers, specifically the concentration of pheomelanin pigment. While lower pheomelanin levels produce pale champagne or light cream shades, higher concentrations produce rich mahogany, amber, and fox-red tones. Because kennel clubs do not list "red" as a standalone breed standard, all ethical breeders register these dogs under the official yellow classification.

When the original yellow Labrador emerged in late nineteenth-century Britain, darker golden and copper shades dominated early litters. The pale, ivory-toned coats only surged in popularity after mid-century conformation judges began favoring lighter varieties. The modern fox red renaissance represents a return to working roots rather than a genetic novelty invented by modern kennels.
