From Roberto Durán to Mariano Rivera: the Legendary Faces Who Put Panama on the Map
The global reach of notable people from Panama City extends far beyond athletic arenas and concert halls. In 2002, Justine Pasek brought the nation into international prominence within the fashion and humanitarian sectors. Born in the Soviet Union to a Panamanian homemaker and a Polish engineer, Pasek spent her formative years in Panama City, studying environmental science before entering modeling.
After finishing as first runner-up at the 2002 Miss Universe competition in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Pasek assumed the crown later that year when the reigning titleholder was dismissed. Pasek became the first Panamanian to wear the Miss Universe crown. Rather than treating the platform as a commercial vanity exercise, she aligned her tenure with serious health initiatives, working directly with the Global Health Council, the Harvard AIDS Institute, and the AmFAR foundation to build awareness around HIV/AIDS prevention in developing regions.
Her work reflected the modern cosmopolitan nature of Panama City. As the capital expanded into an international banking and logistics hub, its public figures began leveraging their global visibility to champion public health, legal education, and environmental protection across Latin America.
