From Swamp to Screen: Shrek 5 Teaser Triggers Massive Wave of Donkey Memes
Whenever high-profile animated franchises return, online communities look for a canvas to channel their disbelief. Donkey stepped right back into that role. With Eddie Murphy Donkey voice tracks circulating as foundational soundbites across social platforms for years, fans did not need new animation to express their thoughts. They simply resurrected vintage Donkey reaction images from the 2000s vault.
Three specific visual templates took over feed algorithms within hours:
Donkey’s wide-eyed, jaw-dropped stare from the original castle rescue became the default response to Zendaya’s sudden casting announcement. His smug, teeth-baring grin from Shrek 2 appeared beneath hundreds of posts celebrating the franchise’s return. Meanwhile, screenshots of Donkey looking exasperated in the rain were repurposed to mock studio animation tweaks. The character functions as emotional shorthand across digital spaces. His face captures extreme optimism, sensory overload, and stunned horror far better than any standard text response can manage.
