Before Hill became a household fixture fronting Harry Hill’s TV Burp on ITV and later hosting Channel 4’s Junior Bake Off, he practiced medicine. Having qualified at St George’s Hospital Medical School, Hall spent his early twenties working round-the-clock shifts in Doncaster and London hospitals. He grew deeply disillusioned with medical bureaucracy and pivotally jumped into the London stand-up circuit during the early 1990s. Around this transformative phase, he crossed paths with Archer, who was carving out her own reputation in London’s competitive visual arts scene.

Archer studied at the Ravensbourne College of Art and Chelsea College of Arts before completing her training at the Royal College of Art in 1986. Where Hall channeled his observational eye into rapid-fire non-sequiturs and absurd sketches, Archer filtered British postwar commercial aesthetics into candy-colored paintings bearing sharply cynical texts. Their artistic worlds operated on similar frequencies of deadpan irony. The pair married in 1996 in an understated ceremony, choosing from the start not to parade their relationship through red-carpet circuit promotions or glossy celebrity magazines.
