Did Diego Rivera Have Children? the Truth Behind His Secret Family and Famous Lovers
Rivera divorced Lupe Marín in 1928 and married Frida Kahlo in August 1929. The question of whether Rivera and Kahlo had children is one of the most heavily searched queries in Latin American art history, fueled largely by the recurring visual motif of unborn infants in Kahlo’s paintings.
The pair had no surviving children. In September 1925, an eighteen-year-old Kahlo survived an iron handrail impaling her pelvis during a horrific bus crash in Mexico City. The internal damage, a crushed pelvis, shattered spine, and punctured uterus, rendered a normal pregnancy functionally impossible.
Despite extreme medical risk, Kahlo attempted multiple times to carry Rivera’s child. In 1932, while Rivera was executing his massive industrial frescoes at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Kahlo experienced a life-threatening, spontaneous miscarriage inside Henry Ford Hospital. The emotional fallout resulted in her visceral lithograph and oil masterpiece Henry Ford Hospital, depicting her weeping on an elevated surgical bed tethered by red umbilical threads to an unborn male fetus. Subsequent pregnancies in Mexico required therapeutic terminations to save Kahlo’s life as her spinal degeneration advanced. The lack of an heir with Rivera remained one of the central physical and psychological wounds of her creative life.
