Hiking the Blorenge: Complete Route Guide, Trail Maps, and Visiting Tips for 2026
High-altitude parking points along the B4246 fill rapidly on dry weekends. The most popular spot is Keeper’s Pond (Pen-ffordd-goch), a reservoir built in 1817 to supply water to Garn-Ddyrys forge. Today, the pond serves as an informal hub for wild swimmers and sunrise photographers. Parking here is free but unpaved, with space for roughly 40 vehicles. Vehicles must stay within marked borders to prevent erosion of the surrounding peat bog.
Further west along the summit access lane lies the Foxhunter car park, positioned adjacent to the broadcast transmission masts. The site derives its name from Foxhunter, the champion showjumping horse ridden by Sir Harry Llewellyn to Olympic gold in Helsinki in 1952. Foxhunter's remains are buried beneath a memorial plaque near the parking area, overlooking the slopes of the Usk Valley. From this high staging area, the trail to the 561m summit cairn is wide, flat, and well-trodden, making it accessible even to inexperienced navigators in fair weather.
