Tyler built her creative footing in the live comedy circuit. A graduate of Dartmouth College with a degree in political science and environmental studies, she initially worked in corporate marketing before committing to live stand-up. She spent years traveling across regional comedy clubs, developing a rhythm rooted in quick observation and unapologetic candor. That stage work paid off in 2001 when she landed the anchor chair on E!’s Talk Soup, making television history as the show’s first female and first African American host.

The exposure instantly expanded her profile. Soon after, she secured a recurring role on NBC’s Friends as Dr. Charlie Wheeler, a paleontology professor caught in a romantic quadrangle between Ross and Joey. The role marked an overdue step for the show’s casting diversity and demonstrated Tyler's ease within high-visibility ensemble casts. Guest spots on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, 24, and Ghost Whisperer followed, establishing her reliability in both comedic and dramatic network formats.
