Is 67 in French Really That Complicated? Fact-Checking French Counting Myths
The vigesimal system did not survive everywhere. Standard Metropolitan French retained the legacy system because Parisian administrative bodies solidified it during the seventeenth century. Vaugelas and the early French Academy chose the forms favored by aristocratic convention, cementing soixante-dix, quatre-vingts, and quatre-vingt-dix into state curricula.
Other French-speaking territories pushed for logical consistency. In Belgium and Switzerland, regional speakers discarded compound equations for streamlined decimal terms:
- 70: Septante instead of soixante-dix
- 80: Huitante (predominantly in Swiss cantons like Vaud and Fribourg) or octante
- 90: Nonante instead of quatre-vingt-dix
Yet across every single regional variation, whether in Geneva, Brussels, Dakar, Montreal, or Paris, soixante-sept never changes. It requires no alternative dialect word because the underlying structure is already streamlined. Across all global Francophone institutions, 67 functions identically.
