KATSEYE did not coalesce organically in a garage or an open mic circuit. They are the deliberate product of an international joint venture announced in 2021 between HYBE, the conglomerate that built BigHit Entertainment and propelled BTS to global dominance, and Universal Music Group’s Interscope Geffen A&M. Label heads Bang Si-hyuk and John Janick set out to test a specific hypothesis: whether the K-pop training and development model (T&D) could function independently of the Korean language and domestic broadcast infrastructure.

More than 120,000 applicants submitted audition tapes across 2022 and 2023. Producers narrowed that pool down to twenty young women from around the globe, housing them in Los Angeles for a multi-year boot camp that culminated in The Debut: Dream Academy. The audition format rejected standard television drama. Instead, HYBE partnered with Netflix to release the docuseries Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE alongside YouTube-streamed performance missions, prioritizing transparent documentation over unscripted sensationalism.

By the time the survival show concluded in November 2023, the final lineup was locked. The resulting unit was built to operate as an international commercial powerhouse, combining the viral community mechanics of East Asian idol fandom with the streaming dynamics of mainstream American Top 40 radio.
