Is 'The Polar Express 2' Actually Happening? the Shocking Truth Behind the Sequel Rumors
The rumor mill is not running entirely on empty air. Legitimate industry interest surfaced when veteran producer Gary Goetzman, who co-founded Playtone alongside Tom Hanks, addressed the property directly during promotional rounds.
Goetzman acknowledged that Playtone has actively explored ways to revisit the property. Unlike projects that studios outright disown, the producing team behind the original wants to make another entry happen. However, Goetzman noted that intellectual property ownership and artistic licensing create complicated hurdles that cannot be solved overnight.
A sequel cannot move forward on producer enthusiasm alone. Author Chris Van Allsburg created the original story in his concise 32-page children's picture book published in 1985. Expanding that tight, singular narrative into a two-hour feature film in 2004 required immense creative stretching, including the addition of runaway train cars, dynamic roller-coaster tracks, and newly composed musical numbers. Crafting a legitimate second installment requires either another original narrative blessing from Van Allsburg or an entirely fresh story framework that does not violate established literary rights.
