'Joe's College Road Trip' Now Streaming: Release Date, Runtime, and Watch Guide
Tyler Perry writes, directs, and produces the feature, anchoring the cast as Joe Simmons. To balance Perry’s unrestrained improvisation, the production enlisted a mix of veteran stage performers and rising television talent.
Jermaine Harris plays B.J., serving as the straight man who anchors the film's escalating absurdity. Harris plays the collegiate anxiety with authenticity, preventing the character from becoming a mere punching bag. Amber Reign Smith appears as Maya, an ambitious student traveling north on a parallel route whose paths continually intersect with B.J. and Joe at rest stops and budget motels.
Longtime Perry collaborator Patrice Lovely makes an extended appearance, reviving her eccentric theatrics during a mid-trip family emergency detour. Familiar faces from the wider Tyler Perry Studios repertory company flesh out supporting roles as state troopers, motel clerks, and nervous admissions deans. The dialogue gives Joe ample room to break the fourth wall, a stylistic trademark Perry preserves from his stage play roots.
