Following high school, many expected Vertes to relocate directly to Los Angeles or New York to pursue full-time acting alongside peers like Mackenzie Ziegler. Instead, she chose a more grounded path by enrolling at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Dance remained central to her life. Vertes auditioned for and made the JMU Dukettes, one of the premier competitive collegiate dance teams in the nation. Her older sisters, Ryleigh Vertes, a standout for the University of Louisville Ladybirds, and Charlotte Vertes, had already shown that collegiate dance offered a rigorous athletic environment away from entertainment industry politics. With the Dukettes, Kendall competed at the National Dance Alliance (NDA) Collegiate National Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida, securing national titles in Division I Team Performance.

Collegiate dance forced a complete technical reset. The individualized, camera-ready showmanship demanded by reality television gave way to the strict unison, cardiovascular endurance, and military precision of university-level competition. It served as a professional palate cleanser, proving that her technical dance foundation was authentic, durable, and capable of performing under strict athletic judging.
