Minecraft Pumpkin Updates: How the 1.13 Update Changed Pumpkin Carving Forever
Prior to Java Edition 1.13 (released in July 2018) and Bedrock Edition 1.4, uncarved pumpkins simply did not exist. Every block that sprouted from an agricultural stem emerged with pre-cut triangular eyes and a jagged grin. If an adventurer needed a clean, organic orange block for structural roofing or agricultural builds, they had to hide the face against adjacent solid blocks or rely on custom texture packs.
Mojang addressed this design limitation during the massive technical overhaul known as "The Flattening" in Update Aquatic. Developers eliminated numerical block IDs and metadata values, introducing unique alphanumeric names for every state. Uncarved variants were established as the default biological crop (`minecraft:pumpkin`), while the etched variant became an independent decorative item (`minecraft:carved_pumpkin`).
This change permanently altered early-game survival workflows. Players could no longer gather wild pumpkins and immediately construct a Snow Golem or craft a Jack o'Lantern on the spot. Crafting iron tools became an absolute prerequisite for unlocking the decorative and utility recipes tied to the carved variant.
