Moana's Pig Identified: Official Stills, Concept Art, and the Story of Pua
Public demand did not go unnoticed inside Burbank. When development transitioned into what eventually became the Moana 2 sequel, story artists prioritized integrating Pua into the primary expedition crew. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, the sequel challenges Moana to travel to the far seas of Oceania to break a curse that disconnects ancestral waters.
This time, Pua is older, braver, and fully prepared to navigate the waves. Rather than shivering on the shore, the pig boards the enlarged double-hulled voyaging canoe alongside Moana, Heihei, and a new crew of Motunui specialists. Pua serves as an observant sentinel on deck, sharing genuine comedic beats with Heihei while giving Moana a direct link to the island community she fights to protect. The creative correction fulfilled nearly a decade of fan expectations, solidifying Pua's status as a legitimate navigator rather than a sidelined domestic pet.
