Air Force & Space Force Family Guide: How to Secure Childcare Grants and Base Support
The USSF maintains a lean installation infrastructure. Many Guardians are stationed on joint bases, remote tracking stations, or commercial industry hubs where military-run base hospitals and expansive CDCs do not exist.
Space Force family readiness integrates directly with Department of the Air Force community resources, but daily execution requires proactive coordination. Guardians working in commercial space centers frequently depend on regional health networks rather than military medical clinics. This makes the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) critical during assignments.
EFMP exists to ensure a family member with documented physical, emotional, or educational needs is not assigned to an installation that lacks adequate medical or educational support. EFMP family support navigators at the installation level help secure:
- Education Interventions: Coordinating Individualized Education Programs (IEP) with incoming public school districts.
- Respite Hours: Arranging state or military childcare fee assistance tailored for special-needs caregivers.
- Dislocation Advocacy: Halting or modifying reassignment orders if the gaining community cannot provide documented medical therapies.
Failing to update EFMP paperwork prior to hard-copy assignment drops often leads to cancelled orders or forced separations. Reviewing profiles annually prevents catastrophic administrative delays during assignments.
