Rayj Dennis Contract & Roster Reality: Will Atlanta Convert His Deal?
RayJ Dennis built his basketball reputation on veteran composure rather than highlight-reel athleticism. During his final collegiate season with the Baylor Bears in 2023, 2024, he finished among the nation's assist leaders, averaging 6.7 assists per game while navigating the grueling Big 12. He operated as a traditional pass-first conductor. He set up teammates off high pick-and-rolls and controlled tempo with deliberate footwork.
That collegiate production did not guarantee a draft night selection. Scouts questioned his burst against switch-heavy NBA defenses and his outside shooting consistency. Dennis signed an Exhibit 10 deal, fought through Summer League rotations, and accepted an initial developmental assignment. By late December, the Hawks front office rewarded his patience by releasing two-way wing depth to clear room for Dennis. His signing reflected Quin Snyder’s desire for reliable ball-handlers capable of running structured second-unit sets without turning the ball over.
