Real Flight Footage vs Ad Claims: Testing the Sms Max Drone 4K Camera
Propulsion performance shows minor bright spots alongside serious flight hazards. The retail package does contain functional brushless motors rather than the cheaper coreless brushed motors common in toy models. These electromagnetic stators spin freely, generating responsive vertical lift and lasting longer than brushed alternatives.
However, poor wind resistance performance limits their utility. Operating in open terrain with sustained breezes of 11 knots (12.6 mph), the flight controller fought continuously to hold its hover coordinate. The lightweight airframe tilted past 25 degrees simply to fight lateral drift, draining battery reserves at twice the baseline rate.
The onboard GPS auto return system produced mixed results. When initiated through the physical transmitter button, the drone ascended to a default ceiling of 25 meters and navigated back toward the launch point. Yet without redundant compass sensors, directional heading drifted unpredictably. Over five test returns, the drone touched down with an average radial error of 4.8 meters from the takeoff pad. In one instance, a minor drop in satellite lock triggered an immediate downward descent into low tree limbs.
The top-mounted obstacle avoidance sensors failed completely outdoors. Advertised as active LiDAR navigation modules, the plastic pod houses two low-power infrared emitter diodes. In direct daylight, solar ambient infrared waves completely blinded these receivers. During controlled flight tests toward a concrete wall at 3 meters per second, the telemetry console displayed zero collision alerts, and the aircraft collided directly with the barrier without slowing.
