See It in Action: Step-by-Step Blueprint for an Infinite Water Well in Minecraft
Building a tall vertical bubble elevator with soul sand or magma blocks presents a common logistical headache: bubble columns only travel through true source blocks, not flowing downpours. Carrying thirty individual buckets up a tower ladder to fill every block by hand wastes considerable time.
Kelp completely sidesteps this chore through game mechanics. Empty a single bucket at the top of a deep shaft so the water flows down to the base floor. Plant a kelp stalk on the dirt or sand block at the bottom and grow it upward using bonemeal until it hits the ceiling.
As kelp grows, its hit-box updates the state of every flowing column it occupies, transforming flowing water mechanics into full source blocks along the entire height of the stem. Break the bottom stalk of the kelp plant, and all converted sources remain stable. Drop your soul sand at the base, and your high-speed vertical transportation system functions immediately.
Vertical Kelp Elevator Conversion:
[ Water Bucket Placed at Top ] --> Streams flow downward
[ Kelp Grown Upward to Ceiling] --> Every flowing block becomes a source
[ Break Kelp Base ] --> Full column remains 100% source blocks
In technical builds and modern automated farms, loose liquid poses a hazard to exposed redstone dust and repeaters. This is where waterlogged blocks solve structural constraints. In both modern updates and survival builds, non-solid blocks such as slabs, stairs, trapdoors, and fences can share the same coordinate space as a water source.
Pouring a bucket directly into an upside-down stone stair allows the block to retain its structural shape while holding an active water source block inside its geometry. This trick keeps farm soil hydrated within a four-block radius while completely shielding adjacent wiring tracks from accidental washouts.
