Snapchat Profile Badges Updated: What the New Star System Means for Users
The persistent confusion among casual users stems from the fact that Snapchat deploys stars in multiple areas of the application, each carrying a fundamentally different meaning.
| Visual Marker | Interface Location | Underlying Meaning | Eligibility Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Star Badge | Next to display name in search, Discover, and Stories | Official Snap Star; identity verified and recognized as a public figure or brand. | Manual editorial vetting via the Snap Inc creator program; non-purchasable. |
| Star Friend Emoji (🌟) | Beside a friend's name in the Chat tab | Someone replayed one of this friend's snaps within the past 24 hours. | Automatic interaction trigger based on direct behavioral metrics. |
| Snapchat+ Star / Icon | On the user's profile card and membership badges | Active subscriber to the Snapchat+ paid premium service. | Paid subscription tier ($3.99, $4.99 per month). |
If a gold star emoji appears alongside an individual's name inside your personal chat inbox, it does not mean your friend suddenly turned into a celebrity. It simply means that an image or video they shared over the last day was captivating enough for someone on their friend list to hit the replay button.
