Taste Test: We Tried Sonic's New Banana Dirty Dr Pepper and Fall Soda Lineup
If you plan to order from the dirty soda lineup, standard app builds often fall victim to poor syrup-to-liquid ratios. High temperatures cause the sweet cream to curdle against the citric and phosphoric acids in the soda base if left sitting. A few ordering adjustments yield a significantly better beverage:
- Swap Original for Zero Sugar: The full-sugar syrups combined with standard Dr Pepper create an overwhelming sugar spike. Opting for a Dr Pepper Zero Sugar base cuts roughly 40 grams of sugar while letting the heavy cream act as the primary sweetening agent.
- Request Lime Wedges: The classic Utah formulation almost always includes fresh lime. Asking the carhop to squeeze two fresh lime wedges into the cup introduces essential malic and citric acid that cuts through the cloying dairy fat.
- Specify "Easy Sweet Cream": By default, store pumps often dump 1.5 to 2 ounces of sweet cream into a medium cup. Requesting half the standard cream prevents the beverage from turning into a lukewarm, separated soup before you finish your drive home.
- Rethink the Ice Ratio: Sonic’s iconic pellet ice melts rapidly in late summer. Order your drink with extra ice to ensure the cream stays cold enough to resist separating.
