The Complete 2026 Guide to Turning off Active Status and Going Ghost on Instagram
Killing your online indicator solves only half the problem. If you click into an incoming direct message, read the note, and back out without answering, the app prints a legible "Seen" receipt below the sender's text bubble. Your active status may be invisible, but your action just confirmed you were holding your phone.
To achieve a comprehensive Instagram ghost mode, pair your deactivated activity status with severed read receipts:
- Navigate to Settings and activity > Messages and story replies.
- Select Show read receipts.
- Toggle the switch to Off.
Once disabled, you can read messages at your leisure without triggering the "Seen" indicator on the sender's device. You can also adjust this setting for specific high-friction group threads by tapping the thread header inside Direct, opening Privacy & safety, and disabling read receipts specifically for that conversation.
Keep in mind that passive actions remain observable. If you view an acquaintance's ephemeral Instagram Story, your username appears in their view analytics list regardless of your active status settings. Disabling activity indicators conceals your immediate availability; it does not turn your account into an anonymous phantom for public story consumption.
