The Dean Forester Gilmore Girls Almost Had: Behind the Scenes of Jared Padalecki's Iconic Role
As the series evolved, so did the writing for Dean. The arrival of Milo Ventimiglia as Jess Mariano in Season 2 sparked the passionate "Team Dean vs Team Jess" rivalry that divided fans for decades. To make Jess an enticing alternative, writers began leaning into Dean's insecurities. The intellectual teenager who once casually quoted Rosemary's Baby and read Tolstoy on the porch suddenly struggled to keep pace with Rory's Ivy League ambitions.
The turning point arrived in the polarizing Season 4 finale. Dean, married to local peer Lindsay Lister, engaged in an affair with Rory that severed the innocence of both characters. Fan reaction was fierce. Viewers accustomed to viewing Dean as Stars Hollow's protector found the infidelity jarring, sparking debates that persist on Reddit and fan forums to this day. By Season 5, Padalecki was cast as Sam Winchester in Eric Kripke's Supernatural. Dean exited Stars Hollow quietly, his character arc intentionally fractured to allow Rory to enter the elite, chaotic world of Logan Huntzberger.
