The Plain English Guide to 'Bullshit with Fur': Definition, Context, and Usage
Spotting coated falsehoods requires systematic attention to linguistic cues. Deceptive communicators rely on predictable structural techniques to obscure bad outcomes.
First, track the passive voice. Evasive speakers rarely say, "We miscalculated our supply chain." They announce that "unprecedented external friction was encountered across fulfillment channels." Removing the subject removes personal accountability.
Second, monitor conceptual inflation. Simple facts require simple sentences. When an announcement buries a single metric beneath five paragraphs describing brand philosophy, strategic paradigms, and holistic transformations, the rhetorical density usually hides bad news.
Third, look for forced emotional alignment. Memorandums that instruct employees or citizens on how they should feel, proclaiming that an austerity package is "an inspiring moment for shared dedication", attempt to police emotional responses before recipients can evaluate the numbers. The heavier the decorative coat, the worse the underlying reality.
