The Truth Behind 'Poot': Why the Unsolved Internet Legend Is Trending Again
When the meme first exploded, Lovato did not find it amusing. In late October 2015, Lovato tweeted: "Cool to see a [bad] angle and bad lighting turn into a whole new person the internet loves... but seriously, that's not me." The tweet was deleted within minutes, but the damage was done. In internet culture, acknowledging an absurd rumor with genuine irritation acts as accelerant.
For several years, mentioning Poot to Lovato in interviews or at meet-and-greets was an unspoken taboo. Fans who brought printed signs to concerts risked ejection by venue staff. Yet the passage of time transformed the hostility. In 2023, Lovato posted a birthday tribute to Poot on social media, posting the infamous photo with a caption acknowledging the joke. That strategic pivot effectively dismantled the meme's rebellious edge. When an artist claims their own parody, the internet loses its sense of illicit mischief.
