The Truth Behind the Blippi Harlem Shake Video: Is the Shocking Clip Real?
In January 2014, John abandoned gross-out comedy entirely. Watching his two-year-old nephew consume low-quality children's content on YouTube, he spotted an enormous market gap. He designed the Blippi character, sewed the first costume himself, and filmed educational field trips to tractor dealerships, zoos, and museums. The pivot worked. Within four years, Blippi pulled in billions of views and millions in merchandise revenue.
Then the past surfaced. In February 2019, reporter Kassy Cho broke a widely circulated BuzzFeed News report exposing John's history as Steezy Grossman and detailing the graphic Harlem Shake footage. Online communities erupted. Parents accustomed to Blippi’s high-pitched giggles and lessons on phonics were confronted with vivid descriptions of a stunt straight out of extreme fringe video sites.
Faced with indisputable proof, John released an official apology statement to address the fallout:
"At the time, I thought this sort of thing was funny, but really it was just stupid and tasteless, and I deeply regret having made it. I’ve grown up a lot since then, and I hope people can see my work now for what it is rather than what I did in the past."
