Before LazyTown was an international television phenomenon, it was Áfram Latibær!, a 1995 Icelandic stage play conceived by Magnús Scheving. An elite athlete who won the European Aerobic Gymnastics Championship twice, Scheving was frustrated that Scandinavian children were adopting sedentary American dietary habits. He created Sportacus, originally "Íþróttaálfurinn" (The Athletic Elf), to show children that exercise and fresh produce could rival sugary snacks and video games.

Scheving was an absolute perfectionist. He constructed one of the most technologically sophisticated studios in Northern Europe, blending live human performance, heavy wirework, high-end motion capture, and practical puppetry. He performed all of Sportacus's backflips, handstands, and stunts without safety wires or stunt doubles, enduring frequent injuries during 14-hour shoot days.

In 2011, Scheving sold LazyTown Entertainment to Turner Broadcasting Systems Europe for an estimated $20 million, staying on as CEO until 2014 to oversee the final broadcast run. Once free of the grueling physical demands of the Sportacus role, Scheving stepped away from production entirely. Now in his sixties, he operates high-end boutique hospitality concepts and restaurants in Reykjavík, conducts corporate keynotes on public health, and continues to consult on youth fitness policy.
