Timeline of a Lip Blemish: Day-by-Day Stages from Early Itch to Clear Skin
When a bump does not match the profiles of acne or cold sores, clinicians check for other common presentations:
- Tiny epidermal cysts containing trapped keratin. Unlike comedones, milia lack a central pore. They appear as firm, pearl-white spheres under the skin surface adjacent to the lip line. They do not inflame, cannot be squeezed out like a pimple, and often persist for months unless professionally unroofed with a sterile surgical lancet.
- Canker Sores (Aphthous Stomatitis): While people often confuse them with cold sores, canker sores develop almost exclusively on the non-keratinized internal mucosa, such as the inside of the lower lip, the buccal mucosa, or under the tongue. They form round, cratered white or gray bases with an angry red halo. Unlike cold sores, canker sores are completely non-contagious.
- Caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, oral thrush produces soft, cottage-cheese-like plaques inside the corners of the mouth and inner mucosal surfaces. A telltale sign is that these plaques can be gently scraped away, leaving a bright red, tender base underneath.
