Wednesday Cast Season 1 Shakeup: Who Left Nevermore Before the Season 3 Wrap?
Season 1 leaned on formidable veteran actors to ground the school's supernatural chaos. Gwendoline Christie delivered an imposing, Hitchcockian performance as Principal Larissa Weems, offering an institutional counterweight to Wednesday's rebellion. Killing her off via a fatal dose of nightshade administered by Christina Ricci's Laurel Gates cleared out the administrative backbone of Nevermore.
Ricci’s inclusion served as meta-textual fan service, bridging the 1990s Barry Sonnenfeld films with the modern streaming era. Once Laurel Gates was swarmed by Eugene's bees and kicked unconscious by Wednesday, her narrative purpose was fulfilled. Retaining either character past Season 1 would have diluted the finality of that story.
Rather than leaving an authority vacuum, Netflix turned to another iconic Tim Burton muse. In February 2026, industry trades confirmed that Winona Ryder joined the Season 3 production slate following the conclusion of her decade-long run on Stranger Things. Ryder's casting instantly restored the prestige pedigree Christie previously brought to the campus, bridging generational gothic fandom while signaling a distinct chapter for Nevermore's leadership.
