The persistent myth that Annabelle broke out of confinement began in August 2020. An anonymous user altered the Wikipedia entry for British actress Annabelle Wallis, changing text to claim she had "died while filming." Algorithms on X and YouTube confused Wallis with the doll, generating automated trends that read simply: "Annabelle has escaped." Within twelve hours, panic took hold across global social platforms.

The rumor recurred periodically because the physical Warren Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut, remains permanently shuttered to the general public. Local zoning boards closed the residential road to commercial foot traffic in 2019, citing neighbor complaints, illegal parking, and constant trespassing. When curious fans discover that visitors can no longer buy tickets to walk into Ed and Lorraine Warren’s basement, they frequently assume the contents were either lost, stolen, or destroyed.

Neither scenario happened. Tony Spera, son-in-law of Ed and Lorraine Warren and leader of the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), routinely posts video walk-throughs to quell online mania. In these clips, he films the doll directly inside her glass box, dispelling claims that she vanished into thin air. "If Annabelle were really on the loose," Spera remarked during one debunking broadcast, "you wouldn't need to read about it on Twitter; you'd know."
