Where Is Izaskun Uranga Now? Inside the Enduring Voice Leading Mocedades Today
International recognition arrived with dramatic force in the spring of 1973. Selected by Televisión Española to represent Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest in Luxembourg, Mocedades walked onto the stage facing heavy political headwinds due to Francisco Franco's aging regime. They performed Calderón’s sweeping composition "Eres Tú."
The performance became an instant benchmark in Eurovision history. Backed by a full orchestra, the group earned 125 points, finishing as runner-up behind Luxembourg's Anne-Marie David. Commercial momentum swiftly bypassed the actual contest results. The single crossed the Atlantic, caught fire on American radio stations, and climbed to Number 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1974.
To this day, "Eres Tú" remains one of the few Spanish-language recordings to pierce the Billboard Top 10 without an English-language translation. The sudden global demand pulled Izaskun and her bandmates onto world tours, establishing deep, intergenerational fan bases across Mexico, Colombia, the United States, and the Southern Cone that continue to support the group half a century later.
