Where Is 'The Middle' Cast Today? What the Heck Family and Their Co-Stars Are Doing Now
Sue Heck broke traditional sitcom molds. She was socially clumsy without becoming cynical, relentlessly hopeful without losing credibility. Over nine seasons, audiences watched her endure catastrophic tryouts, assemble the Wrestlerettes to support low-tier high school wrestling matches, and maintain a bright-eyed belief that life would eventually meet her halfway. Her awkward high school years gave way to college triumphs, business majors, and her sweeping slow-burn romance with Sean Donahue.
Her popularity pushed ABC to greenlight a spinoff pilot in late 2018 titled Sue Sue in the City. The premise relocated Sue from rural Orson to Chicago, following her first genuine venture into young adult independence alongside her best friend Brad Bottig, played by Brock Ciarlelli. ABC filmed the pilot, yet executives ultimately declined to order the project to series in November 2018. While disappointing to fans, shelving the pilot preserved Sue's perfect arc from The Middle series finale, where flash-forwards confirmed her eventual marriage to Sean Donahue after years of near-misses and miscommunications.
