In late 2008, Braun and Usher escorted Bieber into the Manhattan boardroom of Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid. Reid, famous for nurturing acts like TLC, Outkast, and Rihanna, asked Bieber to perform live on the spot. Armed with an acoustic guitar, Bieber delivered an acoustic rendition of Stevie Wonder’s "Respect." Reid did not wait for secondary meetings; he halted further conversations and offered a recording contract immediately.

The infrastructure was set, but traditional radio gatekeepers remained openly dismissive. Station program directors across North America considered Bieber an unproven internet novelty with a voice that hadn't yet dropped. Rather than waste promotional dollars begging radio gatekeepers, Braun implemented an unprecedented web campaign.

Bieber stayed active on Twitter, personally replied to YouTube comments, and visited individual radio stations with his acoustic guitar to sing in executive hallways. In July 2009, Island Def Jam released his debut single, "One Time." Built on infectious mid-tempo pop production, the track vaulted into the top twenty across the United States and Canada, propelled entirely by his organic online audience. By the time his debut project, My World, dropped in November 2009, it achieved platinum certification within weeks.
