Fergal Devitt was born on July 25, 1981, in Bray, County Wicklow, a coastal town south of Dublin. Raised in a close-knit working-class family by his parents, Fintan and Leonie Devitt, he grew up playing association football and Gaelic football. Combat sports captured his imagination early. He fixated on British and American wrestling broadcasts, spending his teenage years studying tape trades of World of Sport, Japanese junior heavyweights, and classic American promotions.

Ireland possessed virtually no structured professional wrestling pipeline in the late 1990s. Rather than waiting for an infrastructure to appear, an 18-year-old Devitt traveled to England to train at NWA UK Hammerlock. His conditioning stood out immediately. Alongside fellow trainee Paul Tracey, Devitt quickly opened an NWA affiliate school back in Ireland, helping establish early training grounds that produced future stars like Becky Lynch.

By 2006, Devitt made a radical career leap. He accepted an invitation to enter the grueling New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) dojo. Japanese wrestling academies are legendary for their austere, military-style discipline. Devitt swept gym floors, washed laundry for senior wrestlers, and endured daily sparring sessions while subsisting on standard trainee rations. The grueling physical investment paid off, cementing his fundamentals with elite mat technique and unmatched stamina.
