Who Is Niki Zefanya? Age, Songs, College Year's, and 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know
Despite early national recognition, Zefanya took a sharp detour away from full-time entertainment in 2017. She left Jakarta and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, enrolling at Lipscomb University to study music business. She sought anonymity and formal training, living in student dormitories, writing assignments by day, and recording lo-fi demos on her laptop at night.
Her time in Tennessee was short-lived but foundational. Fellow Indonesian artist Rich Brian discovered her tracks online and shared them with Sean Miyashiro, the founder of 88rising. Miyashiro immediately recognized Zefanya's rare combination of conversational lyrical vulnerability and sharp production sensibilities. He offered her a recording contract within months. Faced with the choice between completing her degree or moving to Los Angeles to pursue global touring, she withdrew from Lipscomb during her freshman year. The Nashville songwriting circle, however, left a lasting imprint on her storytelling style, which relies on granular narrative specifics rather than broad pop generalizations.
