In July 1914, two years after the sinking and weeks before the outbreak of World War I, a bronze Captain Smith memorial statue was unveiled in Beacon Park, Lichfield. Commissioned by his widow, Eleanor Sarah Bickerstaffe, and sculpted by Kathleen Scott (the widow of polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott), the statue presents Smith in full White Star uniform with arms folded.

The dedication plaque reads: "Commander Edward John Smith, RD, RNR. Born January 27, 1850, died April 15, 1912. Bequeathing to his countrymen the memory and example of a great heart, a brave life, and a heroic death."

The choice of Lichfield, a cathedral city 30 miles from his birthplace in Hanley, reflected an intentional effort by municipal authorities to separate his memory from industrial Stoke-on-Trent. Over the past century, the monument has evolved from an imperial tribute into an educational marker for maritime historians.
