Why Five Below Gift Card Searches Are Spiking: Updates and System Tips
Many consumers holding what looks like a gift card actually possess a five below merchandise credit. While both cards share similar packaging and branding, they run on distinct internal rules. Merchandise credit gets issued when a shopper returns products without an original sales receipt. State laws and loss-prevention standards permit retailers to place heavier restrictions on these funds compared to standard prepaid gift cards purchased with cash or debit.
The primary barrier involves digital redemptions. Standard gift cards operate seamlessly across both the website and the physical checkout line. Merchandise credit vouchers, however, are routinely hard-coded to work exclusively at brick-and-mortar registers. Trying to enter a merchandise credit voucher into an online payment form often triggers an invalid card error, leading shoppers to assume their funds vanished. Reading the back of the card clarifies the designation: if the text references a return slip or merchandise exchange, you must spend those funds in an actual store aisle.
