Why Publishers Are Fleeing Amazon Associates: the Community Backlash Explained
Editorial websites face another challenge from inside Amazon's ecosystem: the Amazon Influencer Program. In its drive to create a social commerce feed reminiscent of TikTok, the company prioritized short-form video content uploaded directly to product listings. Creators who produce unboxing clips and on-page demonstrations frequently capture the "last touch" attribution credit right at the point of sale.
This dynamic penalizes external publishers. An investigative tech review site might invest 40 hours running bench tests on a computer monitor, bringing an undecided consumer to an affiliate link. When that shopper lands on the Amazon product listing, they watch a 30-second influencer video hosted directly beneath the product carousel. If that internal video triggers the final purchase, the commission often transfers to the on-site influencer, stripping the external publisher of their earnings. The external site provided the editorial credibility, but the internal ecosystem extracted the financial value.
