Why Tlc Replaced Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes' Iconic Verse on 'Waterfalls' Rerecording
Watkins and Thomas adjusted course on future releases and live tours. When TLC hit the road for major international runs, including their 2015 return to headlining stages and subsequent anniversary shows, they stopped using substitute vocalists on stage. Instead, they leaned into direct tribute segments.
During live runs, the band projects archival video footage of Lopes on large stadium LED screens while running her original isolated master vocals over the speakers. Watkins and Thomas step back, dimming the stage lights to give Lopes total focus. This approach allowed the surviving duo to celebrate their history without rewriting the recordings that made them icons in the first place.
The duo kept this focus during their 2013 greatest-hits project, 20, which accompanied their VH1 biographical film CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story. While the Japanese remix remained an isolated regional footnote, the group's wider commercial releases restored Lopes' original takes to their rightful place.
